Dear Valued Advisor,The outbreak of coronavirus is being experienced in China with more than 8,235 confirmed cases worldwide, 8,127 specifically in China. Prevention against coronavirus outbreak is serious, as coronavirus is highly contagious and life threatening. While the virus can be spread from person-to-person, it is unclear how easy it is to do so.
Risk to Canadians is low at this time.
There are reported cases of coronavirus being contracted by individuals whom have not travelled in recent months, these individuals are located in Germany and Japan.
As of January 30, 2020, Canada has confirmed two cases of pneumonia caused by the new coronavirus located in Toronto, Ontario and one case, located in Vancouver, British Columbia. Fortunately, reports indicate the individuals are in stable condition.

If you feel sick with a fever, cough, or shortness of breath and have travelled to Wuhan China, or had contact with a person who has been confirmed to have the new Coronavirus, you should:- Seek medical care right away. Before you go to a doctor’s office, urgent care centre or the nearest Emergency Department, call ahead and tell them about your recent travel and your symptoms;
- Avoid contact with others;
- No travel while sick;
- Wear personal protective gear (i.e. gloves, mask, eye protection) when around others;
- No sharing of utensils, glassware and dishes;
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing; and
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
Here’s what you should know:- Preliminary information suggests that older adults and people with underlying health conditions may be at increased risk of contracting a severe disease from this virus;
- Travelers to Wuhan, China, should avoid contact with sick people, animals (alive or dead), and animal markets;
- Travelers from Wuhan to Canada, and other countries, may be asked questions about their health and travel history upon arrival; and
